By participating with ORIGINS, you're helping to build a research platform with a vision to provide lifelong flourishing for children and families.
ORIGINS purpose is to understand how the early environment impacts the development of non-communicable diseases with the goal to develop targeted, more effective prevention and intervention strategies that support all families health and wellbeing.
In 2024, ORIGINS celebrated recruiting our 10,000th family, marking the end of our participant recruitment. To date, ORIGINS has collected over 450,000 biological samples within our Biobank, and over 30 million samples in our Databank - which this number rising as our families grow older.
Though our recruitment is over, there's plenty of ways to get involved in ORIGINS. Whether you’re a family interested in contributing to child health research or a researcher with an innovative study idea, we’d love to hear from you.
For Families
ORIGINS' unique interventional approach means our participating families don't just contribute to research - they receive timely, meaningful feedback along the way, like information on iron levels, allergies, cognitive development, and more.
ORIGINS participants also have the opportunity to be involved in our nested sub-projects, which often provide family's with first-hand access to innovative health and development opportunities.
If you're not an ORIGINS participant, there is still the opportunity to get involved with our research. Explore our currently recruiting sub-projects to see if you’re eligible, or connect with our research team if you’d like to participate in community focus groups that help ensure our research addresses the issues that matter most to families and communities today.
For Researchers
Through its globally unique infrastructure, ORIGINS enables scientists to develop nested 'sub-projects' within the cohort, which deliver innovative, accelerated, cost-effective research that improves the health and wellbeing of families now and for generations to come.
Researchers conducting sub-projects within ORIGINS:
- Eliminate participant recruitment costs via access to a readily available cohort
- Eliminate costs associated with data and biological sample collection via access to detailed longitudinal family demographics, biological samples, questionnaire data, and linked health records
- Eliminate overhead costs via benefits received from proven systems, a skilled team, and nationally recognised world-class facilities
Unlike other WA cohort studies, ORIGINS captures detailed data across multiple timepoints, offering a more complete understanding of the early-life impacts on long-term health - enabling researchers to examine the complex interplay between biological, environmental, and social factors over time.
