Cognition & Neurodevelopment

A child's brain undergoes massive change in the first few years of life, forming millions of new neural connections. They must quickly learn how to function in the world.

By studying the behavioural and cognitive changes that occur early in a child’s life, ORIGINS researchers aim to understand the factors that contribute to their capacity to deal with the challenges of kindy and school, as well as the potential adversity presented by neurodivergence.

Areas covered by this research domain are:

  • Adaptive functioning (including self care and managing daily tasks), and executive functioning (including planning, problem solving, and regulating impulses)
  • Communication and language
  • Literacy and numeracy
  • Neurodivergence (including autism, ADHD, and dyslexia)
